Criminal Appeals & Second Opinions
Independent advice on conviction, sentence and case strategy
An appeal is not a second trial. It requires a careful assessment of the legal test, the evidence, the conduct of the proceedings and the applicable time limits. We provide focused advice for people who want an independent review after conviction or sentence, or who need a second opinion on the strategy in an ongoing serious case.
We begin by identifying the precise decision that may be challenged, the available material and the result the client hopes to achieve. Advice is then tied to the evidence and the proper appellate route—not to unrealistic assurances.
How we can help
advice on conviction and sentence appeals;
applications for permission to appeal and renewed applications;
assessment of fresh evidence or an alleged procedural irregularity;
second opinions on case strategy, expert evidence or previous advice;
review of long or document-heavy Crown Court cases; and
liaison with specialist appellate counsel where appropriate.
What we need for an initial review
Please provide the court, case number, date of conviction or sentence, any appeal deadline, the indictment or charge, the result and the documents presently available. Depending on the case, we may also need the advice on appeal, sentencing remarks, summing-up, transcripts, exhibits and previous legal papers.
If a deadline is approaching, contact us promptly. Appeals are governed by strict procedural rules, and delay may require a separate explanation or application.
A clear scope and agreed private fee
We agree the scope of the initial review and the price before work begins. If counsel, transcripts or expert evidence may be required, we explain that separately before those costs are incurred.
