Voluntary Police Interview Solicitors

Invited to an interview under caution in London or Kent? Contact Peter Bonner & Co before attending. Independent legal advice for a voluntary police interview is free, regardless of income. Call 020 8297 1727.

A voluntary interview is a serious step

You may not be under arrest, but the police are investigating an allegation and your answers may be used as evidence. An invitation described as a chat should not be treated as informal. Ask whether you are being interviewed as a suspect and send us the invitation or officer’s details.

How we help before and during interview

We contact the officer, seek the available information about the allegation, arrange attendance and discuss your account privately. We advise whether to answer questions, provide a prepared statement or exercise your right to silence, based on your case. We represent you during interview and explain the next steps.

Bring relevant paperwork and tell us about any disability, medication or communication needs. Preserve messages and documents that may assist. Do not delete material or contact a complainant to discuss the allegation.

Your rights and possible outcomes

You are free to leave unless arrested, and you do not have to consent to a voluntary interview. The police may nevertheless arrest you if the legal requirements are met. Obtain advice about arrangements rather than simply ignoring the invitation. An interview may be followed by further investigation, no further action or a charging decision. Voluntary attendance does not guarantee a particular outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose Peter Bonner & Co?

Yes. Tell the officer that you want us to advise and represent you, and contact us so arrangements can be made.

Should I say no comment?

There is no answer suitable for every case. Silence can have consequences in some circumstances. We advise after considering disclosure and your account.

Can a parent attend with a child?

A child needs an appropriate adult as well as legal advice. A parent may fulfil that role where suitable. Read our youth defence guidance.
