Released Under Investigation

Being released under investigation can leave you and your family uncertain about what happens next. Peter Bonner & Co advises on ongoing police investigations in London and Kent. Call 020 8297 1727 or request a confidential callback.

What RUI means

The investigation remains open, but you have been released without pre-charge bail conditions for that release. It is not the same as no further action. The police may seek another interview or make a charging decision later. Other court orders or restrictions, if any, are not cancelled by an RUI release.

Practical steps now

Keep the release paperwork, the officer’s details and any reference number. Tell your solicitor about changes to your address or contact details. Preserve potentially relevant messages, photographs and documents, and do not try to influence witnesses or discuss the allegation with a complainant.

Contact us if the police ask for another interview, return property or request information. We can seek an update, review material you provide and consider representations or reasonable enquiries that may assist before charge. An early written account should be prepared with legal advice.

How long will it last?

There is no fixed end date applicable to every investigation. The offence, outstanding evidence and the decision-making process matter. RUI does not have the same review timetable as pre-charge bail. We can ask what remains outstanding and pursue proportionate enquiries about delay, but cannot promise a charging date or that the matter will be closed.

Frequently asked questions

Have the police dropped the case?

Not merely because you were released under investigation. Ask for confirmation of the actual decision rather than assuming silence means the case has ended.

Can I be interviewed again?

Yes. Obtain advice before further interview. Read our voluntary-interview guidance.

Can my family ask for updates?

A relative can make an enquiry, but sharing confidential information depends on your authority and the circumstances.

Is follow-up work free?

Free police-station interview advice does not mean every separate piece of pre-charge work is automatically free. We explain Legal Aid or agreed private funding before undertaking additional work.
